Freedom Fighter Memorial Innagurated in Tuticorin
Speaker R. Avudaiappan inaugurated new memorials for freedom fighters Vellaiya Thevan and Veeran Sundaralinga Devendran at Vallanad and Governagiri near Tuticorin City, respectively, on 20th and 21st of September.
Each of the memorials was constructed by the Public Works Department at a cost of Rs 25 lakh.
Official sources said that the edifices would be maintained by the Department of Information and Public Relations.
The memorial for Vellaiya Thevan having a plinth area of 231.2 square metre was built on a 41 cent plot. Neatly trimmed lawns were established on the premises to add beauty to the tourism spot.
Likewise, the cenotaph of Veeran Sundaralinga Devendran, a warrior and deputy army chief for Veerapandia Kattabomman, was constructed on a 49 cent tract.
Minister for Information Parithi Ellamvazhuthi said that the Government would consider the public requests to set up libraries at the memorials of freedom fighters.
Mr. Avudaiappan disbursed welfare assistance worth Rs.12.5 lakh allocated under various government-sponsored schemes to 383 beneficiaries.
Minister for Animal Husbandry P. Geetha Jeevan, Director of Public Relations A. Chittaranjan Mohandoss, Collector R. Palaniyandi, Secretary of Tamil Development, Religious Endowments and Information Department D. Rajendran and District Public Relations Officer S.R. Sarathy participated .
